Class Title: Assistant Animal Control Officer
Characteristic of the Class:
Under minimal supervision is responsible for assisting the Chief
Animal Control Officer in all aspects of the County Animal
Shelter and the programs that are associated with it. Reports to
the Chief Animal Control Officer.
Essential job functions: Responsible for assisting in
the enforcement of animal control ordinances of the County.
Participating in an on- call schedule to handle emergencies and
time sensitive situations. Assisting with the programs of the
Shelter included but not limited to the Rescue Transport
Program, Adoption, TNR, investigation and handling of dog bite
cases, supervision of inmates, and performing duties required
for the care of animals impounded in the Shelter. Duties include
the picking up of loose, stray and/or animals. Documenting all
intake animals through the Shelter Manager Program and
maintaining a record of all animals. Issues dog license and
adoption certificates. Assistant will work with the Animal
Advisory Board and Friends of the Shelter as directed by the
Chief Animal Control Officer. Other duties as assigned by the
Chief Animal Control Officer.
Job Related Physical Activity Requirements: This
position requires light to medium work requiring the employee to
exert in excess of 75 pounds of force occasionally, and less
force frequently to move objects. Physical activity related to
this position may include climbing, balancing, stooping,
kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking,
pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking,
hearing, and repetitive motion. Sufficient visual acuity is
required to legally operate a vehicle on roads and highways and
prepare necessary documents related to the job of the position.
An employee in this position will be exposed to indoor and
outdoor environmental conditions including extreme heat and
cold; subject to noise and vibration; subject to hazards
including dangers involved in operating a motor vehicle; subject
to fumes and gases, and poor ventilation. Subject to working in
close or tight spaces. An employee in this position could
reasonable anticipate as a result of performing their job
duties, to face contact with potentially dangerous material and
fluids including blood. The individual may be exposed to
biological hazards through contact proximity to animals.
Required Knowledge and Skill Abilities: Must be 21.
Working knowledge of animal behavioral patterns and disease
symptoms; working knowledge of the care and feeding of animals
and the proper and safe use of animal control equipment;
knowledge of local and state regulations relating to animal
control. Administrative ability; ability to establish and
maintain an effective working relationship with other employees,
officials, general public; dependability initiative; and good
physical condition.
Acceptable Experience and Training: Graduation from
High School or hold G.E.D. Supplemented by two years of
responsible experience in animal care obtained through active
participation in FFA animal activities or similar organization
or schooling. Additional training or experience in animal
services and care may be substituted for the for formal
education. Possess a valid Kentucky driver’s license.
